Tenerife in Autumn: Weather, Things to Do and Why October Is Worth It

When October arrives, most of Europe’s beach destinations wind down for the season. Hotels shut up shop, restaurants cut back their hours and the beaches stay empty until May. Tenerife does the opposite.

In the south of the island (in Costa Adeje, in Los Cristianos, along the very same seafronts that are packed in August) autumn looks almost exactly like summer. The sun is still out. The beaches are still open. The sea is still warm enough for a swim. The main difference is that the crowds have gone home.

This guide explains exactly what to expect if you travel to Tenerife in October or November: weather data, things to do, and why this time of year suits certain travellers better than peak season.

What’s the weather like in Tenerife in autumn?

The south of Tenerife has one of the most stable climates in Europe, and autumn is one of the clearest examples of that.

According to AEMET (Spain’s State Meteorological Agency) data recorded at the Tenerife South Airport weather station, the reference station for Costa Adeje, the average figures for the area are as follows:

October:

  • Average temperature: 23.4 °C
  • Average maximum temperature: 26.8 °C
  • Average minimum temperature: 20.0 °C
  • Average sunshine: 214 hours a month (roughly 6.9 hours a day)
  • Average rainy days: 1.6 a month

November:

  • Average temperature: 21.5 °C
  • Average maximum temperature: 24.8 °C
  • Average minimum temperature: 18.2 °C
  • Average sunshine: 193 hours a month (roughly 6.4 hours a day)

These aren’t estimates. They’re long-term averages from official records. In practice, they mean you can plan beach days in October with the same confidence as in July. In November, temperatures dip slightly, but they remain perfectly suited to outdoor living, swimming and day trips.

There’s also a practical advantage over summer: the heat is far more manageable. July and August regularly top 30 °C in the south. October stays at around 26–27 °C: warm enough to enjoy, comfortable enough to walk, hike or explore without stopping every twenty minutes in search of water.

The same beaches, without the crowds

This is the most compelling reason to visit Tenerife in autumn, especially for travellers coming from northern Europe.

In July and August, Costa Adeje’s most popular beaches, Playa Fañabé and Playa del Duque, fill up early. The sunbeds are taken before 9am. There are queues at Siam Park. Restaurants have waiting lists at lunchtime. The seafront promenade is busy from morning till night.

In October and November, those same beaches look completely different. The same Blue Flag. The same lifeguards. The same facilities and water sports. Sunbeds are available. The promenade is easy to stroll. And Fañabé, just a 5-minute walk from Villa Adeje Beach, is one of the best examples: almost 600 metres of golden sand that can feel overwhelming in high season and, in autumn, feels like it’s all yours.

For families with children, this makes a real, practical difference. For couples looking for a more relaxed experience, it’s simply a better version of the same holiday.

Better prices in autumn

Mid-season in Tenerife, roughly from October to mid-December, consistently offers better booking conditions than the summer peak.

Flights from major UK, Spanish and European cities are cheaper. Most airlines cut fares significantly outside July, August and bank holiday weeks. Hotels have more availability and more flexible terms. Costa Adeje’s restaurants, while open all year round, are quieter and more enjoyable.

Things to do in Tenerife in autumn

Autumn doesn’t just hold on to everything summer offers; in some areas, it improves on it. Here are five activities that work especially well in October and November.

Hiking: the temperatures are just right

The trails of southern Tenerife, including the Barranco del Infierno, one of the most popular on the island, are much more comfortable to tackle at 23–24 °C than at 32 °C. The Barranco del Infierno trail starts on the outskirts of Adeje town and runs through a spectacular sheer-walled ravine with a waterfall at the end. A permit and advance booking are required, but in autumn there’s far less competition for time slots.

For a gentler option, the coastal path between La Caleta and Playa del Duque can be walked at any time of year and is especially pleasant on a clear October morning.

Whale and dolphin watching: peak season for pilot whales

The waters between Tenerife and La Gomera are home to resident pods of bottlenose dolphins and short-finned pilot whales all year round, but autumn is traditionally one of the best times for sightings. Trips depart from Puerto Colón, a 10-minute walk from the hotel, and usually last between two and three hours. It’s one of those activities where October timing actively works in your favour.

Mount Teide: shorter queues, clearer skies

The Teide cable car takes visitors up to 3,555 metres, making it the highest point in Spain you can reach without hiking. In summer it’s one of the island’s most visited attractions, with queues and time slots fully booked weeks in advance. In October, the pressure eases considerably. Skies tend to be clearer at high altitude in autumn, which matters when the whole point of going up is the view. It’s still worth booking ahead, but availability is much less of an issue.

Beach days: snorkelling and water sports without the crowds

The sea temperature in Costa Adeje in October is around 22 °C, perfectly comfortable for swimming and snorkelling. Playa Fañabé and Playa del Duque both offer water sports equipment hire right on the beach: paddleboards, kayaks, pedalos and snorkelling gear. In November the water cools slightly, but it’s still fine for swimming for most people.

Local food: guachinches and seasonal produce

Autumn is a great time to explore guachinches: Tenerife’s informal, family-run taverns serving local wine and traditional food at prices that bear no resemblance to the tourist circuit. Most guachinches are in the north of the island, which makes them a natural destination for a day trip from Costa Adeje. The drive takes around an hour.

For something closer to home, the craft market held on Thursdays and Saturdays on the Fañabé promenade runs all year round and makes for one of the nicest strolls from the hotel.

Why stay in Costa Adeje in autumn

Tenerife has two clearly distinct climate zones. The north tends to be greener, more humid and cloudier in winter. The south (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas) is sheltered from the northerly winds by the mountain range running through the centre of the island.

This geographical advantage is most noticeable in autumn and winter. When the north of the island is cloudy and cooler, the south generally stays dry and sunny. If you’re after reliable weather in October or November, southern Tenerife is where the odds are in your favour.

Costa Adeje is home to the best beaches, the most complete seafront promenade and the most direct access to Puerto Colón for boat trips. It’s the natural base for the kind of autumn holiday this guide describes.

Villa Adeje Beach: your base for an autumn holiday in Tenerife

Villa Adeje Beach is a three-star all-inclusive hotel in the heart of Costa Adeje, a five-minute walk from Playa Fañabé and ten minutes from Puerto Colón.

Two practical points that matter especially in autumn:

Heated pool. One of the hotel’s two pools is heated. In November, when the sea temperature starts to drop, the heated pool extends the number of days when swimming feels genuinely comfortable. It’s one of the reasons Villa Adeje Beach guests keep coming back in winter too.

All-inclusive board. Breakfast, lunch and dinner in the buffet restaurant, with drinks included at mealtimes: everything sorted before you arrive. For a week of beach days, excursions and evening strolls, not having to plan meals or keep track of food costs every day removes one of the biggest headaches of any holiday.

The all-inclusive package also includes use of the sauna, jacuzzi, gym, squash court and entertainment programme. Find out more in The Complete Guide to All-Inclusive at Villa Adeje Beach.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tenerife warm in November?
November is a little cooler, with averages of around 21.5 °C and highs of 24.8 °C. It may not be the hottest weather for everyone, but it’s still warm enough for outdoor living, swimming and excursions, especially in the south of the island, which is the most sheltered area.

Can you swim in the sea in Tenerife in October?
Yes. The sea temperature in October is around 22 °C in Costa Adeje, which is comfortable for most swimmers. In November the water cools a little, but Villa Adeje Beach’s heated pool is available all year round.

Is Tenerife worth visiting in autumn?
For most travellers, yes, and often more so than in summer. The weather is reliable, the beaches are quieter, flights and accommodation tend to be cheaper, and activities such as hiking or visiting Mount Teide are more comfortable. The only things to bear in mind are slightly shorter days and the occasional cloudy spell, which is rare in the south.

Is Tenerife very busy in October?
Significantly less so than in July and August. October falls outside the main summer school holidays, which means the summer rush has passed. Costa Adeje still has visitors, as it’s a year-round destination, but the difference on the beaches and roads is noticeable.

Autumn in southern Tenerife isn’t a second-best option. It’s a different version of the same holiday, with most of the advantages and fewer of the drawbacks. If you’re planning a trip between October and December, check availability at Villa Adeje Beach and secure your dates before the best availability goes.
