Fañabé Beach (Costa Adeje): the complete guide to making the most of it

If there’s one beach that sums up everything that makes the south of Tenerife special, it’s Fañabé. Golden sand, calm waters, a lively promenade and facilities to suit every taste. Whether you’re with family, as a couple or on your own, there’s always something to do here.

And the good news: from Villa Adeje Beach, it’s just a 15-minute walk. No car, no hassle.

What is Fañabé beach and where exactly is it

Fañabé beach lies at the heart of Costa Adeje, on the south-western coast of Tenerife. It sits between Torviscas beach (to the east) and La Pinta beach (to the west), and connects directly to Puerto Colón and Playa del Duque via the promenade, so you never need to get in the car.

At over 600 metres long and around 40 metres wide, it’s one of the largest and best-equipped beaches in the municipality of Adeje. Its south-facing position shelters it from the north wind, which means the water is usually calm with low waves — perfect for a worry-free swim.

Fañabé holds a Blue Flag, the European seal that certifies water quality, sand cleanliness and the standard of facilities. That’s no small thing: only a handful of kilometres of the Spanish coastline earn it each year.

How to get there from Villa Adeje Beach

From the hotel, you’ve got several options:

  • On foot: 15 minutes along Avenida de los Pueblos to the promenade. The most pleasant option, especially first thing in the morning.
  • By bus: TITSA line 487 stops at Fañabé Plaza, just a few minutes from the hotel.
  • By taxi: The journey costs between €5 and €8 and takes under 5 minutes.

If you’re driving, there’s public parking nearby, though it can fill up before 10am during high season.

What you’ll find on the beach

Fañabé is designed so you won’t be short of anything. Here’s what’s on offer:

  • Sunbeds and parasols for hire, in both the front and back rows
  • Showers, toilets and changing rooms right on the beach
  • Lifeguards on duty year-round, from 10am to 6pm
  • Accessible facilities for reduced mobility: ramps and amphibious wheelchairs for getting into the water
  • A children’s area on the promenade with mini-golf, a trampoline and a play park
  • A tourist information office on the promenade (Monday to Friday, 10am–5pm)

Water activities: don’t just sit there sunbathing

One of the reasons Fañabé is so popular is its range of water activities. If the waves bore you after five minutes, there’s plenty to choose from:

Sport and fun in the water

  • Jet ski — the classic choice for thrill-seekers
  • Banana boat and fly-fish — great if you’re in a group or with older children
  • Parasailing — see Costa Adeje from the air (spoiler: the views are spectacular)
  • Pedalo with built-in slide — a favourite with younger children
  • Paddleboarding and kayaking — best in the mornings, when the sea is calmest
  • Snorkelling — the calm waters and sandy seabed let you spot marine life without venturing far from shore

All hire services are available right on the beach. No need to book ahead, though in July and August it’s worth getting there early.

The Fañabé promenade: much more than a path between beaches

The Fañabé promenade is one of the liveliest in the whole of southern Tenerife. It runs the full length of the beach and links up seamlessly with Puerto Colón and Playa del Duque. Fancy a longer walk? You can reach El Duque on foot in around 25–30 minutes.

Along the promenade you’ll find:

  • Restaurants and seafront terraces — from affordable set menus to quality international cuisine. The atmosphere at lunchtime and in the early evening is particularly pleasant.
  • Ice cream parlours, beach bars and cafés — perfect for breakfast by the sea or a mid-morning coffee.
  • Shops and boutiques — beachwear, souvenirs and local crafts.
  • Craft market — a market sets up on the promenade every Thursday and Saturday. Worth a wander even if you’re not buying anything.

And as the afternoon fades, the atmosphere shifts. The terraces fill up, the first live music strikes up, and La Gomera’s silhouette appears on the horizon against the orange light of sunset. It’s one of those moments that stays with you.

Fañabé and its neighbouring beaches: which one each day?

From Fañabé, you can explore the whole of the Costa Adeje coastline without ever needing a car. Here’s a quick reference:

The best time to visit Fañabé beach

The short answer: any month of the year. Southern Tenerife enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine a year, and the water temperature never drops below 20°C, even in January.

That said, each season has its own character:

  • July and August are the busiest months. The beach is packed and the atmosphere lively, but you’ll need to arrive early to grab a good spot.
  • September and October are arguably the best months: still warm, the sea at its warmest, and fewer crowds.
  • November to February is the favourite season for European holidaymakers escaping the cold. The beach is never empty, but it’s noticeably quieter, and hotel prices come down.
