Spain’s highest peak, standing at 3,718 metres, is just over an hour’s drive from the south of the island, and you can easily visit it in a single day without missing out on the rest of your holiday.

Why Visit Mount Teide from Costa Adeje?
Costa Adeje is, in fact, one of the most convenient starting points in all of Tenerife for going up Mount Teide. The TF-21 road connects the south to the National Park in about an hour and fifteen minutes, winding through pine forests, mountain villages, and dramatic changes in scenery that form part of the experience itself.
This proximity has a clear advantage: you can set off early, enjoy Mount Teide in brilliant daylight with fewer crowds, and be back at your hotel by mid-afternoon.
Options for Getting to Mount Teide from Costa Adeje
There are three main ways to organise your visit, each suited to a different type of traveller.
1. On Your Own, by Hire Car
The option offering the most freedom. You decide when to leave, how long to stay, and whether to pull over at the TF-21 viewpoints to snap photos.
- Journey time: Approximately 1 hr 15 mins from Costa Adeje.
- Parking: Free at the cable car base station, with opening hours that vary depending on the time of year (from 08:00 to between 18:00 and 19:40).
- Pros: Complete flexibility.
- Cons: You need a car and must keep an eye on cable car timetables if you wish to go up.
2. Organised Excursion with Hotel Pick-up
The most convenient choice if you are travelling without a car or prefer not to drive on mountain roads. Companies such as Atlántico Excursiones offer full-day guided tours with direct pick-up in Costa Adeje.
- Duration: Approximately 7 hours.
- Pick-up: From Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos, between 07:05 and 08:20.
- Guide price: From €55–60 per person (cable car ticket not included).
- Includes: Bus/minibus transport and a guide in Spanish and English.
- Excludes: Cable car ticket, which is purchased separately if you wish to ride up.
This is a great option if you want to learn about the volcano’s geology and history while being driven there and back without worrying about the roads.
3. Teide Tour Including Cable Car
Volcano Teide, the company operating the cable car, also runs half-day excursions featuring pick-up at your accommodation, an official guide, and the cable car ticket included in the price. This is the most comprehensive alternative if you want to avoid last-minute issues with cable car availability.

Tickets including the Teide Legend audio guide (available in 8 languages, including access to the “Science and Legend” exhibition) carry a supplement of roughly €3.50 per adult.
Important: The cable car ticket does not include permission to hike to the peak (the crater, at 3,718 m). This permit is free, but it must be requested several weeks in advance via the National Park website, as daily slots are strictly limited. If you didn’t manage to book one in time, certain excursions include a pre-arranged permit.
Cable Car Timetable
The cable car operates every day of the year except 25th December. During the summer season (July to September), operating hours are extended until 18:40, with the last ascent at 17:40. The rest of the year, it generally closes at 17:00.
Practical advice: Head up early in the morning. Crowds are lighter from 09:00 onwards, and the morning light makes for superior views and photos.
Recommended Full-Day Itinerary
- Morning (08:00–11:00): Depart Costa Adeje along the TF-21, taking advantage of the viewpoints along the way. Arrive at the National Park to take in your first views of the Llano de Ucanca plains and the Roques de García. PDF

Practical Tips
- Bring warm clothing, even in the height of summer: At the upper station (3,555 metres), temperatures drop significantly compared to the coast.
- Book your cable car tickets in advance during peak seasons (Easter, summer, Christmas), as availability sells out quickly.
- Access to the peak is not guaranteed: Climbing to the crater is restricted and subject to obtaining a National Park permit.
- Check the cable car status before setting off: Strong winds may lead to temporary closures.
